In a press conference that happened on Monday (14), actors Eddie Redmayne and Katherine Waterston talked about their characters in “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”.

Oscar-winner for best actor in 2015 (The Theory of Everything), Redmayne reveals that, when he was in college, he auditioned to play Tom Riddle in the Harry Potter franchise. The actor said he was dismissed after saying three lines, and lost hope of being a part of the Wizarding World after the films ended.

At the time, it saddened the British actor, who mentioned “Game of Thrones” and “Downtown Abbey”, series of his country he isn’t a part of the cast.

To Katherine, being cast as Porpetina Golstein was even more of a surprise, since she’s an American actress.

When asked about his character’s future, Eddie reveals he had a long talk with J.K. Rowling the week before they started shooting. He tells us, though, that he received only a few clues on what expects Newt Scamander on the next films, adding that the most interesting thing about the script is that, for him, Newt is just an introduction for a much bigger story.

Specifically about this film, the 34 year-old actor mentions an intriguing aspect of his and the other’s charaters: you can see they start in a way and end up completely different, highlighting the fact that Newt’s more confident in his relationships.

Eddie comments that he developed, with the help of an animal tracker, Magizoologist Newt Scamander’s walk and introversion. According to Katherine, that’s what makes the difference: the characters are well-built and believable. Eddie completes saying that he loves the fact that Newt is really shy around people, but with his creatures, he’s free.

Katherine Waterston reveals that Porpetina Goldstein is a woman with great conviction, but with even bigger insecurities. The actress compares her character to J.K. Rowling, who admitted to feel, many times, insecure in her writing process, despite all the success.

Another question was made about the actor’s permanence on the following films. Eddie and Katherine signed for three of them, but, as fans, were surprised with the existence of two more scripts. Kat joked, saying that she heard from a journalist the story would last seventeen years, and she could see herself ageing and fighting evil with a cane.

About the case he was seen with at the airport the day before, Redmayne explained that it is an old travelling item, and that now he has a problem of walking around with it and looking like he’s being Newt all the time.

And with the confirmation of Johnny Depp being cast as Gellert Grindelwald, the final question was obviously about the person who will play young Dumbledore on the future films. The actors, however, dodged the question, avoiding an awkward situation in case their bets ended up not being chosen.

Since we’re not actors, we can speculate freely. Write in the comments and tell us: who would like to see as young Albus?

Directed by David Yates and produced by David Heyman, “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” premieres in 3D and IMAX on November 18 and is J.K. Rowling’s debut as a screenwriter.
