According to The Hollywood Reporter, the RPG Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery will be set in the ‘80s, following the lead of the hit Stranger Things and the revival of other phenomenon of the decade, such as Star Wars and Star Trek.
With the release set to happen in Spring (Northern Hemisphere), the game is developed by Jam City and released by Portkey Games, Warner Bros. company dedicated to the games related to the Wizarding World of J.K. Rowling.
Even though it is set before Harry Potter, important characters such as Dumbledore, Snape and Hagrid might appear while the students attend to Transfiguration, Potions, Defense Against the Dark Arts and even the Duelling Club.
“Nothing like this has ever been done before,” said Jam City’s CEO, Chris DeWolfe. Each update will bring the game forward, including new spells so the players can become more powerful. “Theoretically, this game could be going on for many years.”
“There are not many Harry Potter apps because J.K. and her team are very selective. But the creative vision we had and the artist we brought forward to work on the game got them comfortable with working with us,” explains Josh Yguado, also a CEO in Jam City.
The game will be launched as a free app for Android and iOS, with optional micro-transactions.
