The actress Evanna Lynch, who portrayed Luna Lovegood, released a special episode on her podcast, The Chickpeeps, about the possibilities of veganism in J.K Rowling’s Wizarding World. Together with Tylor Starr and Robbie Jarvis, who played the young James Potter, Lynch analysed some characters who have potential to be activists for animal rights.
“When they published the illustrated Philosopher’s Stone and I re-read that, I remember being so stroked by the fact that the snake story comes into it. The snake in the zoo and the vanishing glass. And you care more about the snake than you do for Dudley. And then, a couple chapters or pages later, they talk about steak kidney pie. And I remember being like: ‘how is it that we can be made to feel for a snake in a zoo and yet we’re not supposed to feel for the dragons in a captivity or the dragons whose hearts are in wand cores”, observes the actress. “And that’s why we wanted to do this episode. Because we are both passionate about The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and because we are vegans and we want to figure out: are there vegan wizards? Is it hard to be a vegan in the Wizarding World? What precautions do we need to take?”
The three activists discuss the dichotomy in relation to Hagrid with the animals, Hermione activism for the domestic elves and Evanna’s own character, Luna Lovegood. For two hours, they call into questions such as which Hogwarts house would have the largest number of vegans and bring an interview with one of the founders of The Fantastic Beasts Foundation, an organisation that fights against the abuse against animals using the power of influence of J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World and its fans.
The episode was divided into two parts. The first one is already available, only in English. The second part is expected to be released today, 17.
