The actress [Emma Watson] took part in the first G7 Advisory Committee For Equality Between Women and Men on Tuesday (19), in Paris. The meeting, at Elysee Palace, was headed by the French president, Emmanuel Macron. G7 gathers representatives from the largest advanced economies in the world to work on matters of global concern. Germany, Canada, The United States, France, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom are part of this group.
During the conference, the French Government announced the creation of a 120-million-Euro fund to help movements defending women’s rights, especially in developing countries. The priorities of this fund are combating violence, promoting women and girls’ access to education and female emancipation empowerment The group intends to create a legislative pack of actions that countries around the world must take to help to implement equality practices.
Emma Watson works on projects that have been seeking gender equality since 2014 when she was chosen to be UN Women Goodwill Ambassadress. Her first act was to create the HeForShe campaign, whose purpose is to incentive men to take part in the fight against inequality.
At that time, she spoke about the desire of a society with more female representation. “I think it is right that women be involved on my behalf in the policies and decisions that will affect my life. I think it is right that socially, I am afforded the same respect as men”, she said.
Besides the actress, the meeting had the presence of doctor Denis Mukwege, known by his work helping women victims of sexual abuse in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the women’s rights activist Nadia Murad, both winners of Nobel Peace Prize in 2018.
The next G7 summit is going to happen between August 25 and 27, in Biarritz, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, in France.
